DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
With this film, I wanted to examine the fragile nature of trauma, recovery, and the profound lengths a person will go to protect the people they love. Rather than tell Wendy’s story chronologically, I chose a non-linear timeline that mirrors the fragmented and cyclical way the human mind can process a tragic event. Memories, moments of recovery, and pieces of the past gradually come together, allowing the audience to experience the story from Wendy’s perspective and reconsider what they have seen as more of the truth is revealed.
That structure also presented one of the film’s biggest challenges. We had to carefully track Wendy’s physical and emotional healing across a disjointed sequence of memories, using changing arm braces, evolving scars, and other visual details to help establish where she was in her recovery. I wanted those details to reward an attentive viewer without calling too much attention to themselves. Ultimately, The Time in Between the Seconds is an intimate study of trauma and human resilience—of how a single fractured moment can reverberate through a life, and how love can ultimately lead someone to make a profoundly selfless, life-altering choice.
