DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
Unlike the previous films I’d made with larger casts and multiple locations, The Last Visit was conceived as an exercise in simplicity: two actors, one location, and a story built around their interaction. I wanted to strip away some of the complexity of my earlier work and focus on the performances and the unexpected connection between two people who seemingly have very little in common.
The film was inspired by and dedicated to my grandmother, Catherine (Kay), who passed away in 2001, less than a month after I got married. Her kindness and generosity knew no bounds and left a lasting impression on me. While the story and characters are fictional, the compassion at the heart of the film comes very much from her. More than anything, I hope a little of her spirit comes alive in The Last Visit.
