DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
My Dad and Bob Todd was, in many ways, simply an excuse to work with the wonderful Dan Berkey and Chris Young again. Rebecca Rapoport-Cole had previously auditioned for our horror short Preparation, and although she wasn’t cast in that film, her audition stuck with me and helped inspire the energetic nature of her character in this one. It was the first time I wrote a script with all four principal actors specifically in mind, which allowed me to shape the characters and dialogue around the strengths and personalities of the performers who would play them.
Beneath the comedy, I wanted to tell a warm and uncomplicated story about family and acceptance. The film has fun with expectations, but I never wanted the characters themselves to become the joke. At its heart, My Dad and Bob Todd has a very simple message, and I hope audiences come away from the film with it: love is love.
